ROGER, Abraham (A. Rogerius). Haarlem (?) 1609 — Gouda 1649. Dutch Reformed Priest in India and Indonesia. Studies at Leiden, in 1631 left for the east. Worked in 1630-47 as the minister of Dutch congregation in India and Indonesia (1633-40 in Pulicat factory on Tamil coast, then in Batavia). In 1647 returned to the Netherlands. Married with Emmerentia Poots
His great book on Indian religion was published posthumously. The work contains a Dutch translations of two of Bratṛhari’s Śatakas, which AR translated from the Portuguese version made for him by the Brahman Padmanābha. As late as 1879 Burnell lauded AR’s description of South Indian Hinduism.
