RIENCOURT, Amaury de, Marquis. Orléans 18.6.1918 — Bellevue, Switzerland 13.1.2005. French Historian, Indian, South-East Asian and Tibetan Scholar. Born in an old family of nobility, son of Marquis Olivier de Riencourt and Anne Le Bas du Plessis. Graduated from Sorbonne, M.A. Algiers. In 1939-40 served in French navy. In 1947 visited Tibet, spent 5 months in Lhasa and met Dalai Lama. Long time living in Geneva. Married Marie Maddalena d’Acquarone, one son. Wrote his books in English (but usually they were also translated into French).
