SCHMID, Deocar

SCHMID, Deocar. Lobeda (now part of Jena) 14.11.1791 —  Calcutta 3.12.1828. Rev. German Missionary in India. Son of Rev. Rudolf Ludwig Schmid and his wife (d. 1806), brother of —> Bernhard Schmid (1788–1857), also a missionary. After gymnasium in Naumburg studied 1808-13 theology at Jena. Worked as tutor, decided to become a missionary, ordained priest 1815. Together with his bother arrived at Madras in 1817. Worked with his brother in Trankebar, in 1818 sent to Calcutta and worked there until his death, caused by a liver problem. Married Maria Rönneberg.
Publications: Do the Christian scriptures or the Védas contain a divine revelation: the question briefly discussed in a letter to Rammohun Roy. Calcutta 1819; other similar writings.
