STEPHANUS A SANCTO PETRO ET PAULO (lay Antonio Buffi). Brescia 18.3.1692 — 8.5.1767. Father. Italian Carmelite Missionary in India. Joined the order in 1712, was sent to Malabar Mission 1720 and arrived at Verapoly 1721. Sent to Rome on a mission in 1723 he was caught by pirates and held 27 months in Algeria in captivity. Ransomed by the Queen of Portugal he arrived at Rome in 1727 and stayed there. In 1731-34 he was Vicar in Mount Carmel building a new monastery, then back in Rome, in 1740-42 as Rector of mission seminary and Procurator of Mission. He returned to his home province Veneto as Provincial and died there.

Publications: Three manuscript works: Linguae Malabaricae rudimenta. 184 p. in Latin and Malayālam; Prima linguae Malabarico-Grandonicae elementa. 177 p. in L., Mal. & Sanskrit; Dictionarium Lusitanico-Samoscarda-Latino-Malabaricum. 207 p. (only E–Z) – all three manuscripts are preserved in Vatican Library.
