SCHRIJNEN, Joseph Charles François Hubert. Venlo 3.5.1869 — Nijmegen 26.1.1938. Dutch IE Scholar. Professor in Nijmegen. Son of a chemist, educated in Roermond. From 1888 studied classical philology and linguistics at Louvain (under de Harlez, Colinet et al.) and Paris (de Saussure and Henry). Ph.D. 1891. Now studied catholic theology, ordained priest 1894. Served as minister in Roermund studying the Dutch dialect of Limburg, from 1903 also comparative IE. From 1910 bijz. lector at Utrecht, from 1912 bijz. hoogleraar (eo. Professor), Cultuurgeschiedeniss der Christelijke Oudheid & vergel. klassieke taalweteschap, from 1921 butengew. hoogleerar, algemene taalweteschap en het vulgair latin (still at Utrecht). From 1923 the first Rector and ord. Professor of Greek, Latin and General Linguistics at the new University of Nijmegen, until his death.

Publications: diss. Étude sur le phénomène de l’s mobile dans les langues classiques. 1891.
