STIRLING, Andrew. 1793? — Calcutta 23.5.1830. British Civil Servant in India. Son of Admiral Stirling of Woburn, Surrey, educated at Haileybury, 1811-12. To India in 1813. After College of Fort William 1814 Assistant to Resident in Delhi, then Commissioner’s Secretary in Cuttack until 1828. “Persian Secretary to Government and Deputy Secretary in the Political Department; Private secretary to W. B. Bayley while Acting as Governor-General, 1828.” Died after short illness.
Stirling’s account was for a long time the best about the heartland of Orissa (the then Puri and Cuttack districts). I. al. he was the first to report of the Khandagiri-Udayagiri caves. For history he used a local Vaṁśāvalī
