MICHALSKI(-IWIEŃSKI), Stanisław Franciszek. Tarnogród, prov. Lublin 29.1.1881 — Łodz 8.8.1961. Polish Indologist. Professor in Łodz. Son of Seweryn Michalski, a physician, and Stanisława Smalski. Matriculated 1904 from Biała Siedlecka. Studies at Warsaw, then Indology at Vienna (L. v. Schroeder and P. Kretschmer), Ph.D. 1912. Then briefly further studies at Göttingen (Oldenberg & Wackernagel). Then in Warsaw, during WW I in Switzerland (1914-18). From 1921 schoolteacher in Warsaw, in 1930-39 worked in the editorial staff of a Polish encyclopaedia (Encyklopedii Powszechnej Ultima Thule). During WW II in Warsaw teaching privately, writing and translating (those manuscripts were destroyed during the Warsaw Rising in 1944). In 1945-60 taught at Łodz University as Docent (Lecturer), 1954 Senior Docent. He was a specialist of Indian philosophy and a Vedic scholar. S. Cieślikowski was his student.
