CAUSSIN DE PERCEVAL, Armand-Pierre. Paris 11.1.1795 — Paris 15.1.1871. French Oriental (Arabic) Scholar. Son of Jean-Jacques-Antoine Caussin de Perceval (1759–1835, like his son Professor of Arabic at Collège de France) and Catherine Félicité Labroüe (1776–1802). From 1814 studied in Constantinople and travelled in the Near East. In 1833-71 Professor of Arabic at Collège de France in Paris, in 1821-71 also Professor of Vulgar Arabic at É.L.O.V. Légion d’honneur 1839. Member of A.I.B.L. 1849. Died at the siege of Paris.
Publications: Much on Arabic, especially Grammaire arabe vulgaire. P. 1828, 4th ed. 1858, and Essai sur l’histoire des Arabes avant l’islamisme, pendant l’époque de Mahomet, et jusqu’à la réduction de toutes les tribus sous la loi musulmane. 1-3. P. 1847-49.
