HAENISCH, Erich

HAENISCH, Erich. Berlin 27.8.1880 — Stuttgart 21.12.1966. German Sinologist and Mongolist. Professor. Son of an attorney, educated in Berlin. In 1899-1903 studied Chinese, Mongolian and Manchu at Berlin (W. Grube, also listened to Pischel and J. Oppert), Ph.D. 1904. In 1904-11 in China, teaching at military schools in Wuchang and Changsha, travelled around China, Central Asia and Eastern Tibet. Back in Berlin Assistant of F. W. K. Müller in Museum für Völkerkunde. PD 1913 Berlin for Manchu and Mongolian, in WW I served as officer, then in 1920-25 ao. Professor for the same at Berlin. In 1925–31 Professor of Sinology at Leipzig (succeeding Conrady), in 1932–45 at Berlin (succeeding O. Franke). In 1928 visited China and Mongolia, 1936 China. Critical towards Nazis, the only German Sinologist who signed the petition on behalf of Maspéro. After war in 1947-51 Professor at Munich, then emeritus. Member of Leipzig A.W. 1930 and Berlin A.W. 1942. Also knew Tibetan. Married, the Japanologist Wolf H. (1908–1976) was his son. Haenisch was known as a historian and a specialist of Confucianism.
