MCCABE, Robert Blair. 1854? — Shillong 12.6.1897. British Civil Servant in North-East India. Educated at Victoria School, Jersey. “Sent out to India, 1876, served in Assam, in charge of the Naga Hills. A distinguished frontier officer, did much to civilize the Angami Nagas. In the difficulties with the Lushais showed great bravery and judgement, in Feb. 1897 released captives in their hands. Inspector-General of Police, Assam. Killed in the earthquake.” Before Naga Hills he was Deputy Commissioner of Manipur, where grows the Rhododendron macabeaunum named after him, then Deputy Commissioner of Naga Hills district 1881-86 and 1889-91.
