LEARNED, Dwight Whitney

LEARNED, Dwight Whitney. Canterbury, Conn. 12.10.1848 — Claremont, co. Los Angeles, Calif. 19.3.1943. Rev. U.S. Missionary and Theologian. Son of Rev. Dr. Robert Coit Learned (1817–1867) and Sarah Birdseye Whitney (1824–1864), lost his mother when 16. Studies at Williston Seminary and from 1867 at Yale College (B.A. 1870) and University. Ph.D. 1873 Yale. From 1872-75 taught Greek and mathematics at Thayer College in Missouri, in Fall 1875 to Japan. Taught various subjects at Doshisha English School. Finally Professor of Church History and Biblical Theology at Doshisha University in Kyoto. Retired in 1928 and settled in Claremont, California. Hon. D.D. 1896 Yale. Married 1875 Florence Helena Rehard (1857–1940).
