BUTLIN, Raymond Thomas. Fishley, Middlesex 6.2.1907 — Knysma, Western Cape, South Africa 15.11.1990. British Phonetician. Son of Arthur George Thomas Butlin (1877–1964) and Mabel Griffin. Taught at S.O.A.S. From 1939 Sub-Director of Institute of English Studies in Athens. In the 1950s he was the head of British Council in Finland and died in South Africa. He married 1944 Lorna Redin (née Grimmer, 1920–1978) and had three children, second marriage as widower 1981 with Barbara Sykes (née Crook, b. 1918).
