KEMPSON, Simon Matthews Edwin. Castle Bromwich, Birmingham 3.5.1831 — 20.6.1892. British Teacher in India. Son of the vicar of Castle Bromwich, educated at Cheltenham College. Studies at Cambridge, Gonville and Caius College. After graduation to India. From 1858 Headmaster of Government College in Bareilly, then Inspector of Schools in Agra. In 1862-78 Director of Public Instruction in N.W. Provinces, then returned to England. Fellow of Calcutta University. Teacher of Indian history and Oriental languages at Cambridge, 1879-81. Professor of Hindustani at Staff College, 1882-83. Married Mary Fisher, then Mary Reid. In his youth a very noted cricketer.
