JUKES, Andrew

JUKES, Andrew. Dunnville, Moulton, Haldimand, Canada West (Ontario) 1847 — 28.4.1931. British (Canadian) Medical Missionary in India. Educated at Blundell’s Son of Mark Richard Jukes (1817–1854, born in India!) and Harriet Maria Hole (1817–1854). The parents were British, married 1841 in England, but in 1842 already in Canada. They died (1.8. and 3.8.) in Maumee, Lucas County, Ohio. The sonducated at Blundell’s School in Tiverton, Devon, then higher education in medicine in England. M.D. For a while had a practice in Yorkshire. From 1878 medical missionary of Church Missionary Society, until 1906 worked in Dera Ghazi Khan. Married. He compiled an English–Jatki dictionary, which remained unpublished and was lost. Jaṭkī is now better known as Saraikī and belongs to Lahndā group.

Also his brother, Rev. Worthington Jukes (1849–1937), was missionary in North-West India (Peshawar) and wrote his memoirs (1925).
