SCOTT WARING, Edward Warren Hastings. 1783 — 1821. British Civil Servant in India. Son of Major John Scott Waring (1747–1819) and Elizabeth Blackrie (d. 1796). In Bengal Civil Service, worked in Bundelkhand. “Collector at Futteyghur.” From 1801 Assistant Professor of Hindustani at Fort William College. In 1802-03 travelled in Persia, wrote his book on it in Pune. Married Mary Maclean (d. 1857), three sons and one daughter.
Publications: A Tour to Sheeraz by the route of Kazroon and Feerozabad; with various Remarks on the Manners, Customs, Laws, Language, and Literature of the Persians. To which is added a History of Persia, from the Death of Kureem Khan to the subversion of the Zund Dynasty. 13+329 p. L. 1807 (rev. of the first ed. Bombay 1804).
– A history of the Mahrattas; to which is prefixed an historical sketch of the Decan: containing a short account of the rise and fall of the Mooslim sovereignities prior to the aera of Mahratta independence. 12+279 p. L. 1810.
