SCHWYZER, Eduard. Zürich 15.2.1874 — Berlin 3.5.1943. Swiss IE Scholar in Germany. Professor in Zürich, Bonn and Berlin. Son of coppersmith Johann Eduard Schweizer and Sophie Ernst, grandnephew of —> Schweizer-Sidler (who was also his teacher in gymnasium}. Educated in Zürich, matriculated 1892. Studies at Zürich (Kaegi, Hitzig) and in 1894-95 at Leipzig (Brugman, Leskien, Sievers, Windisch). Ph.D. 1898 Zürich. For one year schoolteacher in Solothurn. PD 1902 Zürich, from 1909 ao. Professor of IE there, in 1902-09 also schoolteacher in Zürich. From 1912 Kaegi’s successor as ord. Professor at Zürich. From 1927 Professor of Indogermanistik at Bonn, from 1932 at Berlin. In 1939 emeritus, but continued in office because of war. Member of Prussian Academy 1937. Hon. dr. 1937 Athens. Died of embolism after an operation. Married 1903 Hedwig Bebié (1876?–after 1951), three sons.

ES was mainly a acholar of Greek and IE and did his most lasting work on Greek grammar (beginning with his diss.). However, Iranian studies were an important side-interest. In Zürich he concentrated on local German dialects, but also taught Sanskrit. At Bonn taught Iranian languages and worked on Avesta.
