SWYNNERTON, Charles (born Swinnerton). Douglas, Middle, Isle of Man 27.11.1843 — Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire 16.11.1928. Rev. British Priest and Folklorist in India. Son of the elder Charles Swynnerton (1813–1907), a stone mason, and Mary Callister. Educated at St.John’s School in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, and London University College. Studies at Oxford, M.A. Ordained 1868. Headmaster of Ramsey grammar school in the Isle of Man. From 1877 Government Chaplain, long time stationed on the North-West Frontier (and in Ceylon?). Army chaplain during the second Afghan war 1778-81. After retirement in 1901 served some time in other colonies. Back in the U.K. 1912-21 vicar of Leonard Stanley, Gloucestershire. Married Maud Massy (849–1882), one son, second marriage 1909.
